Marketplace Movers: September 2026

Sept 2026 athena marketplace: -17 net connections, 138 gainers, 48 decliners, 369 flat.

In September on the athenahealth marketplace, 138 companies added customers, 48 lost them, and 369 held flat. That works out to roughly 2.9 gainers for every decliner, and a net loss of 17 customer connections across the marketplace. This is the first month since I started publishing these to have a net negative number of connections. It happened due to an outlier. One company lost 346 connections in a single day. If we remove that one company from the equation, net growth for September would be 329 connections.

Sept 2026 top gainers by volume: Superscript +27, Weave +25, Fullscript +17, CarePilot +16, Labcorp +15.

Most customers added

Superscript wins the month, taking both the top volume spot with 27 new customers and the most growth by percentage, increasing by 71.1%. The last time we saw them on the list was July. Full disclosure: Superscript is a past client of mine. They give patients upfront prices and collect what's owed before the visit. In a world of opaque healthcare prices, Superscript brings clarity both to practices and patients.

Weave added 25 customers to reach 116. It's the fourth month in a row they've shown up on the list. Every one of those months was built a few practices at a time, with no big single-day jumps.

Fullscript added 17 customers and is now at 752. That's five times they’ve made the list in six months. Their workflow is simple, it is free to the practice and in some cases is a revenue stream for the practice. In September, L Catterton and Altas Partners agreed to take a majority stake in the company, so I expect we’ll see more investment into the platform.

CarePilot makes its first appearance with 16 new customers, reaching 261. They offer a collection of AI tools including scribe, coding, ordering, inbox, copilot and claim rules. Ambient scribes are one of the most crowded corners of the marketplace, and CarePilot is the only one to make September’s top 5 by volume.

Labcorp added 15 customers to their Diagnostic Assistant app, which is free to practices with Labcorp accounts. It's their third time on this list since June. Same story as before: free, useful, and will probably keep growing until most practices who send patients to Labcorp are customers.

Fastest growth

Superscript led on percentage too, up 71.1%. See above.

Freed grew 35.7%, from 14 to 19 customers. Another AI scribe on the list, and they were below my 10-customer minimum just a month ago, going from 7 to 14 in August.

Pretty Good AI grew 34.4%, adding 11 customers to reach 43. It's their third time on the fastest-growth list, after June and July. Their AI receptionist handles scheduling, refills, referrals, insurance questions and more, around the clock.

Weave was fourth on percentage, up 27.5%. See above.

SpinSci grew 22.2%, from 18 to 22 customers, after sitting at 18 all summer. They take call center screen pop technology, integrate data from athena, and show the most important info about the patient to the front desk or call center employee who picks up the phone. They also layer in AI agents that handle scheduling, billing, pharmacy and referral workflows. In July they acquired Dialog Health, adding patient texting to their voice platform.

The front office, again

Three of this month's top five percentage growers (Weave, Pretty Good AI and SpinSci) sell AI tools for the front office. Back in June, four of the top ten were AI Phone Agent products. I’ll dig into this in my Q3 review.

Methodology

Customer counts pulled from the athena marketplace 20 times between September 1 and September 30. Minimum starting base of 10 customers to qualify for the rankings. Mirrored listings from the same company are collapsed into one entry, in both the rankings and the summary numbers. Four products moved to new listings during the month; each was matched to its prior listing rather than counted as a new debut.

The 346-connection drop for a single company happened on September 30, and the count has held at the new level through the first week of October.
